This year, due to my dad's cancer, I've learned to anticipate the worst case scenario in every situation and then be pleasantly surprised if things turn out better.
After my dad was suddenly hospitalized last weekend, we knew there was a chance he would be there over Christmas. We were hoping our Christmas "gift" this year would be getting our dad back. Not the case. He has a strep infection in his blood and will be there indefinitely, but "definitely through Christmas", according to the doctor. Although he is in isolation, we will get to visit him at the hospital on Christmas.
I had another freak out session when I found that out yesterday. I was so upset and wanted to cancel Christmas this year. It seemed harsh and horribly unfair. As if life is supposed to be fair or good. It made me upset because I was forgetting that Christmas is Christ. It is not family, food, gifts or the other "trimmings". There is still plenty to celebrate. And we will make the best of it!
Thus, I am pleased to announce that Christmas will not be cancelled this year after all :)
