Most of the time, I eat at the apartment- just little things I can grab easily or prepare myself. The only exceptions: I've eaten out at restaurants maybe twice and dined several times with Moroccan families.
My 'Staples' in Morocco
Plain yogurt: regular or chevre. I eat it plain or on vegetable salads, lamb, and lentils...the Lebanese way: with EVERYTHING!
Flavored yogurt: pistachio, mango, date, coconut, banana, pomegranate, pear. Sometimes I stick them in the freezer for a tasty treat. ~7 yogurt/week
Milk: in Morocco it is sold in boxes, irradiated, and shelf-stable. That weirds out some people, but I kind of liked it. It tastes like evaporated milk. ~8 yogurt/week
Dates: sold in bulk. I eat them with cold milk all the time- morning, noon, night. You can purchase 1 kilo for ~$2 USD. ~1 lb./week
Eggs: I eat them in veggie omelets, hard-boiled with Tabasco sauce, and pan-fried in olive oil. ~1/2 dozen eggs/week
Fruit & veggies: (see previous post) I buy a ton mass of cherries, plums, peaches, grapes, cucumbers, avocados, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, zucchini. ~$3 USD for EVERYTHING!
I eat them plain several times a day. I also cook some of the veggies up with meat or in omelets. Sometimes I make guacamole with pita chips that my roommates seem to love.
Almonds: just for eating ~1/2 lb./week
Lentils: for Lentil Soup, of course, with lots of chunky vegetables.
Lamb: pan-fried with zucchini, onion, and garlic in a little olive oil ~1/2 lb./week
Gouda: cut up in little cubes for snacking. ~1 block/week
Pistachios: fun to shell; just for eating. ~1/2 lb./week
Sidi Ali bottled water: I go through ~7.5 L per week.
I am spoiled with the abundance of fresh, healthy food options in Morocco. I eat like a queen for what seems like pennies! All of this costs $15-20 per week.
