The Red Planet to Glow Brightly

This Christmas Eve, the "red planet" will be exceptionally bright and the moon will be shining full. The reason for Mars' luminescence? The planet is currently sitting directly opposite the sun and is thus reflecting the most light possible. It is also relatively close to the Earth- only 55.5 million miles away. Miami Space Transit Planetarium director Jack Horkheimer claims that "Mars will outshine the brightest star and won't be as noticeable in the sky for nine more years".

The Hubble Space Telescope took the above photo of Mars on December 18.
"Lord, who among the gods is like you?
Who is like you?
You are majestic and holy.
Your glory fills me with wonder.
You do wonderful miracles."
(Exodus 15:11)
