“The kids in room207310 were misbehaving again.
Spitballs stuck to the ceiling.
Paper airplanes whizzed through the air.
They were the worst-behaved class in the whole school.”
As the story goes, after a day of particularly horrible behavior in Miss Nelson's class, her students realize they will spend the next day with a substitute teacher. "Now we can really act up," yells one of the students. That's what they think! Little do they know, they are in for a day with Viola Swamp, a tough, disciplinarian who piled on the school work. Suddenly, they want Miss Nelson back and even go looking for her. As it turns out, the big, bad Viola Swamp was Miss Nelson in disguise.
As a child, I thought it would be fun to dress up and spy on the class as Miss Nelson did. As a teacher, I think that sounds hellish. "Out of sight, out of mind"! That will certainly be my mantra for the next week while I am off to finish my last (insha'allah) grad school course. Perhaps our version of Viola Swamp has accepted the sub job. I left all kinds of textbook readings, summaries, study guides, charts, and quizzes- the children shall not want for work. Waaaaahahahahaaha!!
I thought it appropriate to post a re-discovered gem written by one of my students the last time I had a sub. (Hint to the gentle reader: In middle school speak, a 3=E)

Ignorance is bliss when it comes to missing school...why ruin the time off by hearing about what really happened in the classroom??
