I don't put too much stock in what my students say. After all, they're teens and pre-teens and simply spew all manner of foolish, disrespectful, crude, and insulting remarks all the time. Although I ignore the negative, it is that rare positive, respectful, or kind remark that I latch on to. Today I drowned in a spewage of POSITIVE remarks. Maybe the cafeteria spiked their red slushies or something.
"You know, Ms. K, I really respect you." (weed smoking, big boy gangbanger who insists on shaking my hand each and every day. LOVE HIM!)
"I'm so sorry I was short with you earlier, Ms. K. I don't want to be like that. I apologize. I never want to treat you like that." (over-achieving, MOODY-with-a-capital-M student)
"Oh, Miss!! You're gorgeous today!! I mean, you're always beautiful, but today..." (feisty, adorable little ESL student)
Oh children, I think you all deserve A's.
