I'm heading to Turkey in a few hours! I will spend several days in Istanbul and then take the long trek (by bus) out to Cappadocia with an even longer trip to Ephesus after that (possibly). We'll see. No firm plans, other than to arrive in Istanbul tomorrow morning and to ring in 2009 while straddling two continents :)The frequency with which I am able to travel to exciting, new places is a blessing! This year alone, I have visited 9 countries and 1 pseudo-country (Palestine). It is due entirely to a number of providential factors:
1. The ridiculous amount of school holidays.
2. The proximity of Egypt to so many attractive destinations.
3. Reasonable air-fare prices to those destinations.
4. Friends in those destinations from whom I can mooch.
5. The very low cost of living in Egypt!
Though I am prone to gripe about the annoyances associated with residing in Egypt, I know that if it weren't for the "third-worldliness" of the place, I wouldn't be able to afford such fantastic vacations. Despite the low cost of living, I still live quite frugally, saving 80% of my paycheck for loan repayment and travel.
See you in 2009, insha'allah!!

Wow, I was hoping we'd get to talk to you between trips, but with the time difference it was not to be. Call if you get the chance!
That sounds like such a great experience, to be able to travel all over and experience different cultures. Not to mention to be able to do it and still save 80% of your salary is fantastic! Take care of yourself! :)
Well, today is January 1. I hope you've already straddled the 2 continents--we're looking forward to hearing all about it!!
