I Have a Crush

"Something about Israel and the Middle East grabbed me in both heart and mind. I was totally taken with the place, its peoples, and its conflicts. Since that moment, I have never really been interested in anything else. Indeed, from the first day I walked through the walled Old City of Jerusalem, inhaled its spices, and lost myself in the multi-colored river of humanity that flowed through its maze of alleyways, I felt at home." (Thomas Friedman, From Beirut to Jerusalem)

What can I say? I have a shameless crush on Israel. I spend my days reading Israeli newspapers, discussing Israeli politics with my co-worker, researching summer jobs on kibbutzim and dreaming about another grueling bus ride through the Sinai and across the border. My parents hope it's nothing more than puppy love- a fleeting adolescent infatuation- but I'm not so sure!

If you have to be a half-globe away from us, then Israel/Jerusalem is a much better choice, in my opinion, than Saudi Arabia, Lebanon or Syria!
