***UPDATE*** Scrooge owns our school so there is no holiday and no impromptu vacation. Desipite the fact that all other schools and universities are out-of-session today, we are at work. (However, we get so many holidays, really, I have nothing to complain about :)
Although existence in a wholly disorganized, illogical society does chip away at one's sanity, there are a few perks to had as well. Namely, the random smattering of last-minute holidays. Case in point: The Egyptian government- this week- declared Thursday (tomorrow) a NATIONAL holiday.
One from a Western perspective might assume NATIONAL holiday = paid holiday for all. Nothing is ever that straightforward in an irrational, haphazard system, such as the whole of Egypt.
In my own disorganized, unpredictable microcosm of Egyptian society (aka my place of employment), this week has featured much prolonged speculation (ad nauseum) by students, parents, and students alike as to whether Thursday will actually be a holiday. Rather than notifying all concerned parties ahead of time (as would be the rational, professional approach to the situation), the administration has been completely silent in its' stance toward this spontaneous holiday. You can imagine the myriad emails, phone calls and inquiries I have fielded from parents and students alike regarding the alleged "holiday".
Unperturbed by the madness around me, I have developed a contingency vacation in case of such a fortuitous event. (See below). Would anyone like to guess the identity of this undisclosed location? Shhhhhhhhhh...no one tell my parents!

"Would anyone like to guess the identity of this undisclosed location? Shhhhhhhhhh...no one tell my parents!". Well, judging by the last sentence, I am going to guess Beirut, Lebanon.
i think it's too late to not tell your parents :-)
