Never Ask Why

Just with I become a bit cocky thinking that I have Egypt figured out, just when I assume Egypt could do nothing more to surprise me, just when I assume that I have experienced the extent of the irrationality and craziness...

Less than one hour into the 2009-2010 teaching year, I sat in bewilderment, mouth agape upon hearing news that the Egyptian government would be forcing our school to close for one month. The forced closure has been levied due to a heightened "swine flu threat". Oddly enough, the closure will last for he duration of Ramadan, and not a day longer. I'll let you do the math on that one. With the usual stellar logic and flawless reasoning, the Egyptian government claims the influx of internationals returning to the country for the beginning of school could provoke a swine flu outbreak of epic proportions. This, of course, makes great sense- since it's clear that 80 million Egyptians will now choose to stay home rather than travel during this new MONTH-LONG holiday.

Egypt, you are so ridiculous, sometimes. Wait, all the time.

Predictably, the Egyptian government could not come to a decision in any sort of timely and organized fashion. More predictably, hysteria and over-emotionality reigned as teachers were wringing their hands speculating about various scenarios to make up missed school time. Extended days? Saturday school? Shorter summer? Forfeited holidays? With the gossip mill at full throttle, the school announced the "decision" during the last hour of the work week with teachers heading out to various weekend holidays.

The decision, you ask?

Well, no decision, really. School will commence either September 26th or 27th. School will be made up, yes, but how? Again, no decision.

As teachers headed for the doors in jubilation, striking out for many desirable European and Asian destinations, the school offered it's best piece of advice: "Check the website for updates".

As I was heading out, my Egyptian friend reminded me "Never ask 'Why'"!!

What will they do when the real flu season arrives and they have used up all the "sick" days in the calendar year? My oh My!
