Amazing Foods: Blood Oranges

I just ate a blood orange and the dietitian in me was inspired to promote their consumption. Blood oranges are amazingly delicious!! I look forward to the fall/winter season every year solely due to their availability in grocery stores.

Blood oranges are juicy, sweet, have a dark "blood" red flesh and a pitted skin texture. The distinctive color of blood oranges is due to the presence of anthocyanin pigment, not typically in citrus fruits. Blood oranges are slightly less acidic than regular table oranges. Strawberry and raspberry-like overtones characterize the unique flavor of blood oranges.

There are three main varieties of blood oranges: Tarocco (from Italy), Sanguinello (from Spain), and Moro (from California).

Blood oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C and also contain folic acid, potassium, thiamin, calcium and magnesium. Plus, they're full of antioxidants, which help slow down the aging process and protect against heart disease, cancer, stroke and arthritis. Deeper-colored fruits, like blood oranges, generally offer higher levels of antioxidants than their paler counterparts.

And...I'll say it again: they are amazingly delicious!! :)

These so-called Blood Oranges sound very intriguing. How do they compare to clementines?
