Hassan II

It is the 2nd largest mosque in the world. According to Google, it can hold up to 25,000 worshippers inside, and another 80,000 in the courtyard. That does not surprise me. Its minaret is the world's tallest at 689 feet.

Other unique features:
*Built on reclaimed land.
*Almost half of the surface of the mosque lies over the Atlantic water.
*This was inspired by the verse of the Qur'an that states "the throne of God was built on the water ".
*Part of the facility floor is glass so worshippers can kneel directly over the sea.
*Lasers shine at night from the top of the minaret toward Mecca.
*It was built to withstand earthquakes.
*It has a heated floor, electric doors, and sliding roof.
*6,000 traditional Moroccan artisans worked for five years to transform granite and glass into abundant and incredibly beautiful mosaics, stone and marble floors and columns, sculpted plaster moldings, and carved and painted wood ceilings.

*It was completed in 7 years time.
*Rumor has it that it cost upwards of a billion USD to construct.

The mosque is AMAZING. The expanse of the courtyard, architectural intricacies, and symphony of ocean waves lapping the nearby shore are entirely overwhelming. We had the privilege of walking around it during the noontime call to prayer. That was an incredible experience. Sarah took a great video, and my pics are HERE.

Wow. It really is a beautiful structure. Why is it Hassan II (was there a Hassan I)?

Yeah. Sultan of Morocco from 1873 to 1894, member of the Alaouite dynasty (same dynasty as the wildly popular, current king- Muhammed VI)
