Lent: To Observe or Not to Observe?

The Lent season is upon us again. Though I am a Protestant, I do observe Lent. I find the observance of Lent both challenging and meaningful to me. This year (as last year), I am giving up sweets, but I am going a bit more radical this time. I have decided to forgo all forms of refined sugar...including the 1 1/2 tsp. of brown sugar in my oatmeal each morning. As a sugar addict, this will be no simple task. It may very well drive me to insanity.

What about you? Do you give something up for Lent? If yes, then what?

Ash Wednesday Lectionary Readings

Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 or Isaiah 58:1-12

Psalm 51:1-17

2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

I tried to vote but got this message: "query error or cannot connect to database". Looks to me like a simple case of ballot box rigging. Probably only the yes votes get counted.

Me too! I'm going to give up eating fast food... and limit eating out (at a nicer place) to once a week.

Actually, Lent is observed by many Protestants. Episcopalian, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches observe Lent just as the Catholics do. For many Christians, this is an important time for reflection. Here's a link to an interesting article:

I think about it every year and then don't do anything about it. But, I approve of it! Suddenly, I remember I didn't do it and then it is too late. But, hmmm, I haven't eaten out anywhere yet - maybe I could do that. I can't afford it anyway. lol Does that count? However, I am using my prayer time once a week to just listen and see what He has to say.
