On Location

Alive and well in the thriving but dreary (46F and raining) metropolis of UlaanBaatar, Mongolia! And just think, this is SUMMER in the world's coldest capital city! I'm now on Day 14 of a 26-day train junket through Asia. So far, I've spent time in Hong Kong, Beijing, and now UlaanBaatar and the Mongolian countryside...and seen everything in between from a train window.

Tonight, we're hopping on a train to Irkutsk. Though the distance between UB and Irkutsk isn't much to speak of, this will be a 2-day journey due to the 11 hours we'll spend at the border while the Russians inspect the train. Once we reach Irkutsk, we'll journey to Lake Baikal- the world's largest freshwater lake. The length of the lake is the distance between Moscow and St. Petersburg and holds 20% of the WORLD'S freshwater. From Lake Baikal, we'll head straight through to Moscow...57 hours on the same train sans SHOWERS! So far, we've traveled 2,300 miles by train with 3,893+ miles and six time zones ahead as we cross Russia.

Well, I'm glad you're having a good first half of the trip. I should greet you in Mongolian: Sain Baina uu (but it's pronounced more like SamBanOh). I have a friend here at Cambridge from UB--we're both doing Biblical Studies PhDs. I'll have to tell him that my globe-trotting cousin has just breezed through his hometown.
